SBWC WORKSHOP
January 27, 2018, @ 25th Street Library
Topics Covered
Copyrights- During the workshop, I gave my definition of copyrights, and when they take effect. I also listed where anyone can read up on copyright laws. Below you will find a link and several passages from copyright.gov pertaining, to when your work is protected, and if it has to be officially registered.
“When is my work protected? Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device”. (Office, 2018)
“Do I have to register with your office to be protected? No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.” (Office, 2018)

Publishing- Depending on what you are looking for, and your goals. You have in my opinion two options: Self-Publish or Brick & Mortar Publishing. Either is a good option; everything depends on you the individual writer, and your wants, and needs of course. With self-publishing you are doing all of the legwork, such as hiring editors, illustrators, marketing/self-promotion, formatting your book, uploading your work to various sites, and most importantly shopping your book around to vendors /customers.
ISBN- International Standard Book Number “The ISBN identifies the title or other book-like product (such as an audiobook) to which it is assigned, but also the publisher to be contacted for ordering purposes. If an ISBN is obtained from a company other than the official ISBN Agency, that ISBN will not identify the publisher of the title accurately. This can have implications for doing business in the publishing industry supply chain”. (Bowker, © 2014 R.R. Bowker LLC)
I hope that you found this information, helpful in some way. As always please share, and pass that knowledge on to someone else. We also have a video of the workshop on YouTube!
If you or someone you know is interested in joining our workshop. The club meets every 4th Saturday at 25th street library, from the hours of 11 am to 1 pm.
