Southside Book and Writers Club Workshop 'Marketing Tips'

The marketing plan below is based on me (Kim L Walton). I first started this plan in 2016, over the years it has changed, as I have learned what works for me and what does not. Even though you will see my information as an indie author in each category, you can use this as well to design or start your own marketing plan for whatever business you choose.

What am I promoting?

  • Books ~ Novel, Novellas, Short stories

Genre?

  • Fiction

  • YA fiction

  • A fiction

  • Nonfiction

  • self-help

My books will appeal to certain demographics based off of the genres they will fall in. Young Adult books are marketed for teens (13-up). Adult Fiction will be marketed to anyone over the age of 18; there may be sexually content, language, violence, and drinking.

Who/what are my target markets?

  • Women

  • Men

  • College age

  • Teenagers

  • Single parents

  • Families

  • Married

  • Afro-American (black)

  • Caucasian (white)

What methods will I use to reach my market?

Internet – develop an email list

Word of mouth - conversations with people

Promotional ads- paid advertisement on social media sites, newspapers, radio

Events –readings, book fairs, expos, festivals

Website -

This is the short list of what I actually do to market my books. Yes, this was my actually rough draft. During another workshop, I will show you all how I cleaned this up and added more information, details to it. As you start to develop that marketing plan; place a calendar or use an excel spreadsheet before you and start listing what days what best for you to market.

The information on that spreadsheet or calendar will give you an idea of your schedule or what your schedule could be? If you market at night, document that information as well. If you follow your marketing plan or schedule; you should start to see when your peak times are for marketing, your areas of weakness, as well as your areas of strength.

as always, please share, if you found this information helpful and do your research...
